Francis Oliver Finch was apprenticed to John Varley, by whom he was introduced to William Blake and Samuel Palmer, becoming one of the Shoreham disciples known as 'the Ancients'. He almost never depicted real places, preferring idealised visions of imaginary poetical landscapes, of which this well-preserved moonlit scene is a characteristically dreamy example
