EVELYN DUNBAR N.E.A.C., R.W.S., A.R.C.A (1906-60)

Oxford

Oil on canvas, initialled 'E.D'

Prov: Roger Folley Private Collection

At the end of the war, Evelyn Dunbar and her husband, Roger Folley bought Vyners Cottage, a ruinous cottage in Long Compton in Warwickshire. For the first time in years, Dunbar was able to turn her attention to new subjects. Her biographer, Gill Clarke, says “During this period Evelyn was able to complete her first portrait in oils of Roger and a more allegorical painting, Oxford...its location is unknown.” This is that lost picture, only rediscovered two months ago.
Dunbar was later to take up a position as a teacher at The Ruskin School of Drawing and of Fine Art in Oxford.
