Sir William Charles Ross was the last of the great miniature painters, best known for his intimate portraits of the young Queen Victoria, Prince Albert and their circle. He was the son of a miniature painter and something of an infant prodigy. Entering the RA Schools at 14, he won numerous prizes and began exhibiting the following year (1809) with this picture, a portrait of a young woman and a baby as Venus and Cupid.
