Hennell's portraiture is not widely known but this intimate and affectionate portrait of an elderly neighbour shows that he was a talented draughtsman and could capture a likeness, despite the freeness of his style.

Also depicted are two elegant depictions of the elaborate straw ornaments traditionally used to commemorate the harvest. Hennell had the eye of a true countryman and a reverence for the folk culture of his forbears that was fast disappearing
