The Crown and the Slipper

Black chalk, heightened with coloured chalks, signed and dated 1908

‘The Crown and the Slipper’ was only the second work that Bell exhibited at the Royal Academy and this is a study for that work – an unusually large and atmospheric study in chalk that shows Bell’s affinity for the medieval, which would later find expression in the sepulchral interiors of Westminster Cathedral.
